Most installed fences cost $20 to $60 per linear foot in 2026, or $3,000 to $9,000 for 150 feet. Those are national figures. What you pay in Mountain View comes down to local labor, the material, the length of the shared runs and how easy it is to reach the fence line.
Price ranges are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026, not our own quotes. Peninsula labor rates, lumber and metal prices and the conditions on your lot move the real number up or down. Last checked October 2026.

| Material | Installed cost per foot |
|---|---|
| Chain link | $9 to $30 |

How much does a 6-foot wood privacy fence cost?
The national range for a 6-foot privacy fence is $25 to $60 per foot installed. The totals below use the general $20 to $60 range, and a tall solid fence falls in the upper part of each row because it takes more boards. Around here that fence is nearly always redwood or cedar, and the grade of the lumber is a large part of the price.
| Fence length | Typical installed cost |
|---|---|
| 50 feet | $1,000 to $3,000 |
| 100 feet | $2,000 to $6,000 |
| 150 feet | $3,000 to $9,000 |
| 200 feet | $4,000 to $12,000 |
What is the cheapest fence to have installed?
Chain link. The national figures start it near $9 per foot. For privacy at the lowest cost, ask for a simple dog-ear board fence on pressure-treated posts. For a large dog in the yard on a budget, 5 or 6 foot chain link does the job. One local note: Mountain View asks for a building permit on a non-wood fence at a house, so count that step in when you compare.
Is black aluminum cheaper than wrought iron or vinyl?
It is cheaper than wrought iron and close to vinyl. The national ranges are $25 to $75 per foot for aluminum, $50 to $85 for wrought iron and $30 to $60 for vinyl. Aluminum will not rust and needs no paint, so it is the usual pick for pool barriers and open front fences.
How much extra does a gate cost?
Each gate is priced on its own. The width, the material and the hardware set the number. A wood walk gate in a side yard is at the low end. A wide driveway gate is at the high end, and an operator with a keypad adds more. You will see every gate as a separate line on our quote.
How much extra for a slope, brush or an old fence?
We price those after the site visit, because they differ from yard to yard. In Mountain View the common add-on is taking down and hauling away the old fence, often with ivy or jasmine grown through it. Tight side yards mean everything is carried in by hand. In the hill towns, add steep ground, poison oak and long carries from the driveway.
I got three quotes and they are far apart. Which one is realistic?
The realistic one is the bid that prices the same job you described. Line them up and compare the footage, height, lumber species and grade, post size and depth, gate count, tear-out, permit and cleanup. A bid that sits far below the others has usually left something out. Confirm that each bidder holds a California contractor licence, because an unlicensed price is not comparable.
Does a fence add value to my home?
It helps a house show well, more than it pays itself back. Buyers with dogs or young children notice a sound fence. For property taxes, the Santa Clara County Assessor's Office decides what counts as assessable new construction, and a replacement fence is a small matter next to the house.
